Taylor Hicks - "The Fall" Live!

Because we are anxiously awaiting the release of Taylor's "Early Works" CD - available exclusively through Target stores on August 12, 2008, I thought I'd post this unbelievable video of Taylor singing his original tune, "The Fall", which of course will be included on the new compilation CD. This performance was filmed in Waukegan, IL on July 12, 2007 by 'Samz'.

Taylor Hicks - News Flash! "Early Works" Exclusive with Target Stores! Available August 12, 2008!

YES!! WE'VE MADE CONTACT!!

According to Taylor's management team, his new compilaton CD, "Early Works", which will consist of his 2 pre-AI indie albums, "In Your Time" and "Under the Radar", will be available for sale through TARGET stores - an 'EXCLUSIVE' deal, dropping on August 12, 2008. That's 2 WEEKS from today, folks! Start gathering those pennies and be prepared to invade Target's CD section!

These store exclusives are a great thing for the artist, who will pocket sometimes up to 4 to 5 times as much money than they would earn if they released their CD through a standard distribution deal - and - the promotion is usually better. And being that Taylor is releasing this on his own new label, "Modern Whomp Records", he's sure to turn those old tunes in pure Gold. And deservedly so. The 12 tunes featured on the CD are some of Taylor's best self-written compositions. Songs like "Somehow", "The Fall", "In Your Time", Son of a Carpenter", "Heart and Soul", "My Friend", "The Deal", "West Texas Sky", "Hold Onto Your Love", and "Soul Thing" are brilliant and all are written by Taylor himself. It's a chance to let the casual fan in on Taylor's great songwriting abilities. I think once people hear this material, it will turn some heads for the better. This is a great set-up for Taylor's forthcoming album in the Fall of brand new originals.

Things are really falling nicely into place for the Soulman and I for one, couldn't be more thrilled. Spread the word people! Taylor's about to kick some serious musical ass in the near future!

Taylor Hicks - Regaining Control of His Career

As Taylor enters a new chapter in his career with a brand new CD on a brand new label dropping this Fall, a new national and international tour next year, a compilaton CD of his pre-Idol days called "Early Works" (out August 12 - details to come shortly), a DVD of his 2007 concert tour, and presently, the star of *Grease* on Broadway, I thought back on the first time Simon Cowell saw Taylor and said he "should be singing backgrounds - not in the forefront". I only hope he walked on the corner of 47th and 7th Avenue in New York City this summer to see Taylor's 10 story billboard - or better yet - the reactions he's getting from the 100,000 or so theater-goers he'll have played to this summer at the Brooks Atkinson Theater. He recently said in a radio interview that he's happy to have regained control of his career. This "Grease" gig is probably the best career decision he's made yet.

Does this look like someone who should be singing in the background?
I think not!

And to the jealous haters out there who insist Taylor crawled into a hole 2 years ago, I suspect this crowd outside the Brooks Atkinson Theater on Broadway didn't get the message.

Taylor Hicks - Big News Coming About Upcoming CD!

Well, folks, looks like yesterday turned out to be one of the most tumultuous days in Taylorland yet! Many of us received notifications from amazon.com that Taylor's new 'reissues' album, Early Works has, depending on what you want to believe, either been backordered because of the brisk pace it was selling (they claim they ran out of copies and are waiting for their supplier to ship more), or the CD is not for sale anymore because of poor sales!? Trigger Twilight Zone music......

What's strange about this is that the CD is still for sale at many on-line outlets, such as Barnes & Noble, F.Y.I., VH1, Sam Goody, CDUniverse, MTV, among others. To add to the confusion, there's an unsubstantiated rumor floating around that one of the major chain department stores will be the sole retail outlet for this CD (sorta like Walmart was for Bo Bice's last CD). We are supposed to get some information from Taylor's managment regarding this CD this week and hopefully that will put all the anxiety and speculation to rest. The only thing we DO know from his management is that the release date has been moved UP one week and will be released in about 3 weeks, on August 12, 2008. Happy happy joy joy for that bit of good news!

What's particularly annoying, however, is that a few of Chris Daughtry's fans - the chrolls as I like to call them, are using this uncertain period to try and confused Taylor's fans - spreading lies about the circumstances behind the confusion at amazon - even being so brazen as to invade Taylor's own fansites. The only thing I want to say to you about these poor pitiful lonely souls is to try and NOT engage them in conversation. Nothing. Zippo. Nada. (yes, I've been guilty of this myself, I'll admit). By engaging them in conversation, we are doing exactly what they want and gives him an ego boost into thinking they have any power or control over Taylor's fans. Let's make believe they don't exist - even though the temptation is strong - and dismiss the ignorant gnomes. If only Chris Daughtry knew about his insane fandom, he'd roll over in shame and embarrassment and hit his bald, poser head on the pavement. Ouch! :)

But anyway, getting back to the important news, I suspect BIG announcments coming down the pike SOON, maybe even today, so stay tuned for lots of excitment! BTW, lots of great reviews of Taylor from people attending "Grease" to see the new leads. Check out this beautiful picture! And oh yea, check out WWOR's clip with Taylor from the Grease stage! And yes, he admits to being a lady's man! Wooot!

Taylor Hick's "Early Works" - Sold Out on Amazon.com! Release Date Moved Up!

Congratulations Taylor fans! You have completely depleted Amazon.com's pre-order stash of Taylor's upcoming CD, "Early Works"! I'm not sure I understand why they felt the need to take the entire page down from their system just because they are waiting to replentish their supply, but be that as it may, it's a good omen for the demand of the CD when it gets released on August 19th. As with other CDs, a simple "Out Of Stock" would have sufficed and eliminated the panic that spread through the fan base, but as we all know, a simple solution like that is never in the cards where Taylor *F* Hicks is concerned. Hopefully, EMI Distribution will send out more very shortly and all will be right in Taylorland again. I'll report back when the CD is again available on the Amazon page.

Until then, I encourage you to buy copies for everyone you know on the equally as good Barnes and Noble website!

Late Breaking News from Taylor's Camp !! The release date for this CD has been moved UP to AUGUST 12! More information as it becomes available...........

Yes folks! Taylor's three month stint in *Grease* this summer is proving to be an unquestionable huge success at the box office! Last week, receipts were up 3%, bringing overall theater capacity to 96%, making it the 8th most popular musical on Broadway (out of 29). It sold 8,237 seats out of a possible 8,576. Since Taylor started in the musical on June 6, attendance has been consistantly over the 90% mark and in the Top 10 highest earning shows on Broadway.

Taylor Hicks - Phone Ringing Off The Hook Leaves Little Time for Lake Guntersville

According to the LandReports website, Taylor has found the perfect piece of property on the shores of Alabama's largest lake. Now all he needs is the time to enjoy it.

Taylor Hicks has got a problem. It’s got nothing to do with the task at hand—his New York stage debut as “Teen Angel” in the current revival of Grease on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre—and everything to do with his jam-packed schedule.

The winner of the fifth season of American Idol, Hicks rocketed to the top of the charts with his single “Do I Make You Proud,” which debuted at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was certified gold. His major label debut Taylor Hicks started out at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 charts and made it all the way to platinum. Now he’s arrived on the Great White Way, where I tracked him down on his cell phone just prior to stepping into a rehearsal for the popular musical.

And the man’s problem? He’s hit the big time, and that means he’s got next to no free time to head home and kick back on a special piece of property he’s bought in the Heart of Dixie.

Long before the Soul Patrol helped catapult Hicks to the top of the charts, he spent many a year doing hard time, learning the ropes and working his way from gig to gig throughout the Southeast. In big cities and small towns, he not only created his own signature style, but he fell in love with a stretch of country along the largest body of water in Alabama-Guntersville Lake.

At 69,000 acres, the man-made lake was created decades ago by the Tennessee Valley Authority when it walled off a 75-mile stretch of the Tennessee River from the Guntersville Dam to Nickajack Dam. The resulting lake is an integral element in the navigation channel that spans the length of the Tennessee River from its headwaters in eastern Tennessee, into Alabama, back into Tennessee, and ultimately merging with the Ohio at Paducah, Kentucky. There’s also one other attribute to the lake.

“It’s gorgeous,” says Hicks.

Like every Alabaman, Hicks grew up hearing about Lake Guntersville, but it took a college buddy to really show him the lay of the land.

“After we got out of Auburn, I used to book Taylor in here at The Docks, and of course nobody showed up,” says Mark Hall, who owns the popular restaurant on the shores of the lake. “Now that he’s won American Idol, I can’t afford him, and everyone keeps asking me when he’s coming back,” he adds, breaking into laughter.

Back at Auburn, the two were stuck in the same rut. “I was a broke chef, and he was a broke musician,” says Hall. “He was playing gigs, and I was studying hotel and restaurant management. We’d get together with all our friends at wherever we were living. I’d cook for everyone, and he’d put on the show.”

After college, Hall returned to his picturesque hometown of Scottsboro, the county seat of Jackson County, site of a hefty portion of Lake Guntersville. The City of Scottsboro owns an amazing facility on the lake called Goose Pond Colony, which as Hall quickly points out has two 18-hole golf courses, a fullservice marina, swimming pool, and of course The Docks, the kind of place where a group of business types might be closing a deal at one table, and right next door a family of four just got off the water. Hall insists on free live music every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Throw in some of the best large-mouth bass fishing in the South, and it only took a couple of trips to Lake Guntersville for it to become a favorite for Hicks.

“It’s a special place. I’ve got plenty of friends that I’ve had relationships with over the years just playing, performing for folks up there. It will always be a special place inmy heart. The bass fishing on Lake Guntersville, it’s just awesome. I love the lake,” he says.

So much so that the year after he became America’s Idol and vaulted to the top of the charts, Hicks ended up buying an amazing piece of property on Goose Pond Island at a lakeside community called The Oaks. Not surprisingly, he made sure it came with all the extras he needed: two marinas, a boat launch, clubhouse, gated access, and, most importantly, unbelievable views.

“I’m looking down over the water. I’m looking down and across it. You’re on the water, you’re close to it, you have a slip for it. And there’s so much to do on the water. It’s just a great lake to be on,” he says. The only catch, as Hicks readily admits, is that given the demands of his hectic schedule, he only makes it up to Goose Pond Island just once or twice a year.

“Right now, the phone is ringing off the hook,” he says, as our easy-going conversation begins to wind down. “So I’m having to straddle and perform and do records and Broadway, but when things settle down, you’ll definitely see me on that lake, that’s for sure.”

Taylor Hicks - Check My Digs Out Simon! Living The High Life in NYC!

According to a blurb in today's NY Post, "Taylor Hicks has a suite setup in a celebrity-loving condominium building. The American Idol winner, now a Broadway star, is the latest boldface name to take a pied-à-terre in the Atelier building - just a short sashay to the Brooks Atkinson Theatre where he co-stars in "Grease."

The Post has previously reported that Lindsay Lohan and Nick Lachey (and we suppose Vanessa Minnillo) have been provided with free apartments at the amenity-laden West 42nd Street complex. We're hearing Hicks doesn't have a similar pay-us-later deal, and his lease is up on September 15 (he leaves "Grease" on September 7).

"He's currently purchasing pieces and working with designers to make his apartment his own comfortable place," says a source. Our Micki Siegel will have an exclusive look inside Hicks' place later in the summer.
"

You can live here too if you're rich! Seems the one-bedroom furnished model is currently being rented for a mere $4,600/month! Check it out here.

So the next time you see a chroll crawling around the 'net, just remind them of Taylor's summer digs and watch them crawl back into their roach infested hole :)

Broadway Taylor Hicks Has Mystery Megastar Deal?

The Broadway media can't heep enough praise on Taylor Hicks this summer (and rightfully so!) Here they continue to go Ga-Ga over his great performances in 'Grease' and how he's making those cash register receipts go "KA-CHING!". They also picked up the story posted last Thursday by MTV.com about one of Taylor's new songs being on-hold for a mysterious female "megastar"! Oh, I hope that gets revealed soon!

They write: "The hit Broadway musical Grease has hit gold with Taylor Hicks. The New York Post reported that the box office numbers are up, audiences and fans are lining up to see him, and Broadway businesses benefitting from the Hicks Effect. Now, word comes from MTV that while Taylor Hicks is actively performing in the show, he is also finding time to continue to write his own new music. The results will likely be heard on his next CD…all songs that is, except, possibly, for one. The word from MTV is that Hicks disclosed that one of his new songs has attracted the attention of a megastar who anticipates recording it. No name dropping here, though it was implied that the star was female. As they say around the Grease show, Hicks is the word. Soul Patrol!"

Masterclass Expert Gives A Thumbs Up To Taylor Hicks!

We all know that Taylor has great chops, but it's always a nice read when a 'pro' gives their reinforcement nods. This is the case when the 'masterclass lady 'gave him a thumbs up on his recent performance of Billy Joel's New York State of Mind.

She says, "I found this Taylor Hicks video while exploring other video sites and thought that it did merit a blog topic. He performs an excellent version of Billy Joel’s “New York State Of Mind.”

Now, Taylor Hicks bluesy style may not appeal to all the listeners, but I loved it. However, what I loved even more so was his phenomenal vocal artistry. Additionally, his voice sounded extremely focused and resonant - check out the circular mouth and relaxed jaw and you will get what I mean.

He focuses and projects his voice so well, highlighting the progression of his technical skills. Hopefully, this will be an ongoing presence in his future performances, as it will certainly stimulate him to increase the dynamic possibilities of his vocal gifts.

I loved when he mentioned the “circular breathing” element in reference to his saxaphonist - looks like Taylor is becoming very astute in the benefits of diaphragmatic breathing.

Go take a walk over there and give her a few kudos for taking the time to bring this magnificant performance a spotlight on her blog. It's nice to see the world is seeing what his fans have known for a long time - that Taylor Hicks is a force to be recogned with in the world of music and entertainment.

Who Is Taylor Hick's Mystery Megastar???

Taylor is hinting of some really big news - possibly having one of his songs recorded by a HUGE megastar! Who could it be??? This is what he told MTV:

By Garth Bardsley

On Tuesday night, we swung around the corner from our Times Square offices to the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, where “American Idol” season-five champ Taylor Hicks is cutting his teeth on Broadway, playing the part of the Teen Angel in the most recent revival of “Grease.”

The silver-haired “Soul Patrol” leader gave us a tour around the theater, which is actually a bit of a reality-show mecca. Besides Hicks, the show’s two leads, Max Crumm (Danny) and Laura Osnes (Sandy) were found via the little-watched NBC show “You’re the One That I Want.” And then there’s Cody Green, who won Bravo’s even littler-watched “Step It Up and Dance” while a member of the Grease ensemble.

Hicks is also writing lots of songs, mainly for his own use on his sophomore album coming out in the fall. But he spilled the beans that a certain “megastar” has one of his songs on hold to possibly record. He wouldn’t say who, but he did let it drop that the singer is a female.

And from the VH1 Website (more video below):

In 2006, when salt-and-pepper-pelted soul singer Taylor Hicks won the fifth season of "American Idol," he probably never imagined he'd be popping out of an ice-cream cone, singing "Beauty School Dropout."

Now Hicks is doing just that, playing the Teen Angel — a role made famous by Frankie Avalon in the 1978 film version of "Grease" — in the musical's latest Broadway revival. For his first foray into acting, it's not a bad gig, and Hicks is hoping it will open more doors for him down the line.

"It's a really cool part," he said. "The Teen Angel comes down and tells Frenchy she should put down her teasing comb and go back to high school. I've kind of channeled Elvis, a little Graham Parsons and Liberace, all at the same time, for this role. It was just a perfect fit and a way for me to experience the Broadway stage in a small dose, instead of a full role. I come out in the second act. I pop in from an ice-cream cone, in a blue rhinestone suit, and rock it out for a few minutes."

Hicks said his Teen Angel is like none that has graced the stage before him, because he "Taylor-ized it." To prepare for the role, he claims he "started doing séances to channel Elvis, and he told me that I needed to wear a midnight-blue, rhinestone-studded suit, and that's what happened. Now we're packing the place out. It's sold-out every night, and I get to play a little harmonica, which is cool. I couldn't do that on 'Idol.' That wasn't the year where you could play instruments."

According to Hicks, the "Grease" part wasn't his first offer. Earlier this year, he'd been asked to join the Broadway cast of "Hairspray," a gig he couldn't fit into his schedule. But being part of "Grease" has given him the itch to act again.

"Right now, I'm releasing a new record in the fall — hopefully — so [doing] this allows me to stay in the city, be in front of thousands and thousands of people for the next three months, and it allows me to reinvent myself, as a musician, an entertainer and possibly a Broadway actor," he said. "This is a nice way to get my feet wet in the acting field. Before, I was so entrenched in music — playing clubs and roadhouses when I was a kid — so Broadway was kind of an abstract thought for me. It's not now. It's real, and I enjoyed being directed from a theatrical aspect as opposed to a musical aspect. It's going to be an interesting road for me."

Hicks said that his fans, known as the "Soul Patrol," have been at each performance — so much so that during one of the shows, he looked down and spotted his face tattooed on a woman's body ("It wasn't anywhere revealing," he said).

Hicks' year has been full of ups and downs. It started off on a bad note, as Arista Records revealed they'd dropped Hicks from their roster after just one release. His 2006 self-titled effort has sold 702,000 copies to date, making it the worst-performing of all the "American Idol" champs' albums. But then, Hicks landed the "Grease" gig, and, with a new album to record, he's close to signing with a new label.

"I don't have a name for the album yet, but I do know that it's some of the best music that I've ever written, and from an artistic standpoint, this album, being in my control, has allowed me to really breathe as a songwriter," he said. "As an artist, you kind of understand the times and what your surroundings are and write from them. So there's some political undertones on the album. It's a serious time for us."

Hicks said he's not worried about the future, because he knows he has what it takes to sustain a career in music. "It would be scary if I didn't really believe that I was supposed to do this," he said. "For me, as a kid, I knew I was supposed to entertain and perform for folks. When you have that self-belief and inner-determination, you understand there are peaks and valleys in this business, and you just keep working at it. You show up to work, whether it's 25 people at a Steak & Ale, or Wembley Stadium and there's 500,000 people. If you keep working, and you're good to people, you'll be blessed."

Despite the poor sales, Hicks said he's still proud of his debut album. "As many songs as were thrown at me in the 10 minutes I had to choose them, I kept a good guard up, because I knew my artistic guard would allow people to say that I really took the integrity to keep my art," he said. "I've been working 15 years to make it in this business. I didn't want to not make it anymore. I'm proud of that record. I just wish we would have had more time to record it, but I'm proud of it. That's key."

Taylor Hicks Raises the Roof at the "Capitol Fourth" Festivities!

Once again, our soulman does his thang at the Capitol! Movin' and groovin' like only he can! I'm positive that these performances reminded people who voted for him 2 years ago on American Idol what a dynamic performer Taylor is and that he's still out there smiling and entertaining.

This is what the Washington Post had to say about Taylor's set: "...American Idol winner Taylor Hicks electrified the crowd with a jazzed-up rendition of "This Land Is Your Land..."

For those who missed it or want to see it again, here you go!

4th Of July Audience Pledges Allegiance To Taylor Hicks

Washington D.C. Brings Out Big Crowd For Broadway’s Mr. Hicks
The event had all the fireworks and excitement one would expect on a 4th of July celebration, but the sky was blue and the sun was shining. Actually, it was July 3 in Washington DC, and front and center at a rehearsal for tonight’s Washington capital celebration of America’s Holiday was Mr. Taylor Hicks. In this photo we see the large crowd pledging allegience to the flag, of course, but it also looks as though they are pledging allegiance to Taylor Hicks. His fanbase is huge, and according to the New York Post, he’s bringing in an extra $150,000 a week in ticket sales for his performance in Broadway’s Grease. American Idol, Broadway, and the 4th of July. Catch the live performance tonight.

Taylor Hicks - WZID Interview - 'Capitol Fourth' Promotion

Taylor was on WZID-FM in New Hampshire this morning promoting his appearance on "A Capitol Fourth" in Washington D.C. on July 4. Check your local PBS station for times and specific channel in your area. He will be singing at least 3 songs, one of which will be "Dancing In The Dark" by Bruce Springsteen (the same song he sang on the Top 3 show on American Idol), Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" and an original tune! Listen to the interview here (thanks cochem for finding this!):

While we wait, here's Taylor doing Dancing in the Dark on American Idol!
