Daughtry Bores Fans at Arena Concert

According to Madison.com, Daughtry's first arena tour flopped hard! The fact that tickets are being cut in half for his tour (some being sold for as little as $13.99 and still not selling out) and his new album flopping at the record stores (and soundscan), I'd say Daughtry's 15 mins are just about up. Read on...

Fifty-two years ago, when Jerry Lee Lewis pounded out that dizzy rock 'n' roll classic "Great Balls of Fire," could he have even imagined a time when actual balls of fire would thunder forth onstage to a flaccid version of the genre he helped define?

Probably not. He probably couldn't have imagined "American Idol," either, or the relentless stream of carefully packaged singers it keeps shooting out.

Yet here we are. Saturday night at the Alliant Energy Center, massively successful "American Idol" finalist Chris Daughtry staged a spectacle with his band Daughtry that copped rock's power without much heart.

Yes, there were great balls of fire, torrents of sparkly firecrackers and booming canon shots. Daughtry (the man) can posture all he wants, hold his arms up to the heavens in actorly distress and flex his sculpted and tattooed biceps, but he never called forth anything like the feral shiver of Lewis yelping "I want to tell the world that you're mine, mine, mine, mine!"

But let's forget Jerry Lee Lewis for now. He's such a distant cousin to today's hard rock that it's a bit of an unfair comparison. Even in the context of the hard rock genre that Daughtry places itself in, however, Saturday night's show fell short. There were many times during the show when the band came close. Lead guitarist Josh Steely would pluck out a nasty opening hook, and I'd think "Alright! Rock 'n' roll!" But then Daughtry (the man) would neuter it with a plodding melody and brooding lyrics.

So he's a sap and doesn't do anything Creed or Nickelback hasn't already done. This should come as no surprise to anyone who's heard the band's self-titled 2006 debut or this year's follow-up, "Leave This Town." But what's most disappointing is that Daughtry can't muster the emotions of the songs any better live.

Even the fans, who filled about two-thirds of the Coliseum, looked bored during songs like "One Last Chance" and busied themselves with cell phones and texting. In general, though, the crowd gave the band an enthusiastic reception, sang along to the radio hits and pummeled the ground like a stampede of animals for the encore. It's amazing what being on television will do for a band.

Like openers Cavo and Theory of a Deadman, Chris Daughtry is a gracious presence on stage and seemed genuinely grateful to be performing. His energy never lagged during the 90-minute show, and whatever he lacks in songwriting and emoting, he makes up partially with his fine, arena-ready voice -- all the more impressive on Saturday evening since he said he'd spent the day before sick in his hotel room.

Mid-show the rest of the band left the stage, and he sat on a stool for a faithful acoustic cover of Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight." ("Put that song on the top of the list of songs I wish I wrote," he said afterward.)

Daughtry can belt out a ballad, but his voice sounded best in arena rock mode. Likewise, the band seemed most comfortable and at ease battering out larger-than-life rock like the grand finale "There and Back Again." In between Daughtry's megaphone-distorted vocals and bassist JP Paul's slapping solos, "There and Back Again" was the only time during the show when the music seemed worthy of fire balls.

Daughtry's Balloon Head is Back!

It has come to my attention by a frigid anal tiny little gnome that this picture is "sick". WTF? LOL! Kiss my ass, bitch! I actually think it's beautiful and a perfect replica of Daughtry - uhm, maybe a bit too small, actually - the head. I'm going to post it here for now, and then switch it over to the side so we can look at it whenever we want. And little Deb, if you're reading this, go fuck yourself.

Taylor Hicks Shows Off Soulful Pipes at Detroit's Magic Bag

Taylor Hicks took to the stage at the Magic Bag in Detroit, MI yesterday and performed a very rare acoustic set before a full house of enthusiastic fans. Most of the set consisted of songs from his recently released album, The Distance, along with cuts from his self named post-Idol album. He was as handsome as ever, conversing lightly with the audience and seemed relaxed, happy and in his natural element playin' his music and singing his songs. He was accompanied by long time friends/musicians John Kulinich http://www.myspace.com/johnkulinich on guitar, Brian Less http://www.myspace.com/brianless on piano/keys, and Jason Parker on bass http://www.waynemillsband.com/jason_parker.html. Taylor of course blew some skillful harmonica along with guitar.

Complete Set List:

The Distance
I Live On A Battlefield
The Runaround
What's Right Is Right
Don't Let Me Down
The Deal
Wedding Day Blues
Once Upon A Lover
Nineteen
Gonna Move
Indiscriminate Act of Kindness
Maybe You Should
My Sweet Lord
Seven Mile Breakdown
Feeling Alright

From all accounts, this was one of his finest gigs in a long time, introducing and singing for the first time three new songs , "Maybe You Should", co-written by Taylor and Mike Reid, who penned Bonnie Raitt's hit single "I Can’t Make You Love Me", "Indescriminate Act of Kindness", a gorgeous ditty penned by Foy Vance, and a great novelty cut, "Wedding Day Blues", written by Allen Little and Taylor Hicks. Quite evident is the emotional heart and soul he gives to each and every song he sings. He is one of the rare performers that actually delivers convincingly on stage and continues to be both a dynamic musical force as well as one of the biggest underrated talents of the last decade.

Currently he is starring in the touring company of "Grease" and if the show happens to roll into your neighborhood and he is playing a side gig like this in your local club, do yourself a favor and buy a ticket because talent like this deserves to be heard. Well done, Taylor.

Birthday Boy Hicks Signs Cutting Edge Deal Unlike Any Other Idol

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- He's "Takin' It to the Streets" on "American Idol" -- now Season 5 winner Taylor Hicks will be takin' it more directly to the people. Celebrating his birthday today, Hicks has tapped the independent artist services company Artist To Market (A2M) to release his much-buzzed-about new album, due in stores on February 10, 2009. The platinum-selling singer-songwriter will be releasing the new title with complete control of direction and ownership of his masters on his solely owned and operated, Modern Whomp Records label. Hicks is currently in the studio with producer Simon Climie (Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Faith Hill).

"In this digital age, when artists can connect more directly with audiences, this is a partnership that makes a lot of sense," says Hicks. "I'm very much enjoying being in the studio with Simon working on the new album and look forward to releasing it through A2M early next year."

"We at A2M are very excited to be working with the team at Modern Whomp Records on this release," said Paul Ignasinski, General Manager of A2M. "As the industry continues to evolve, it's exciting to see significant artists approach the marketplace in a new way, and truly take control over their own destiny. This is exactly why A2M was built in the first place -- to provide a service platform for these artists to prosper on their own terms."

During the last two years, Taylor Hicks has seen his self-titled Arista debut album certified platinum, performed with the likes of Willie Nelson, Widespread Panic, The Allman Brothers and Jackson Browne, toured through Asia, penned the brisk-selling Random House memoir Heart Full of Soul, spent time in NY this past summer for his three-month Broadway debut as "Teen Angel" in Grease, and will take Grease on a national tour beginning December 1.

In August Hicks' Modern Whomp Records released Early Works (a reissue compilation of his two independent albums, In Your Time and Under the Radar) through the Welk Music Group. Hicks is also planning the release of Whomp at the Warfield, a DVD showcasing a live performance by Hicks and his band at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco.

Chris Daughtry Gets Sued For Stealing Song!!!!!!!!

The shiz just hit the fan. Seems the dullest tool in the drawer, the band (and I use that term loosely) Daughtry, is rightfully getting sued for stealing music. The band 'The Asphalt' is sueing him and others for the song "Feels Like Tonight". Apparently he isn't creative enough to come up with any original music, so he and his boy band need to steal other musician's property. This comes as no surprise to most of us since it's universally known that Daughtry is a copy-cat band who steals its style and sound from Nickleback.

I've got only one thing to say about this embarrassment. Bwawawa!! It couldn't happen to a better bunch of tools!

"....Randy Mazick, of the Arizona-based band The Asphalt, has named Apple in a new lawsuit against Chris Daughtry. The suit, which targets Daughtry, songwriters Lukasz Gootwald, Martin Karl Sandberg, and Sheppard Solomon, the Bertelsmann Music Group (owner of RCA Records), and Apple for violation of copyright over Daughtry's 2006 hit "Feels Like Tonight," claims the song lifts its "hook" from The Asphalt song "Tonight," written by Mazick in 2005 and registered with the US Copyright and Trademark Office in April of this year. Apple is named in the suit because the company distributes the song via iTunes...."

Taylor Hicks - Check My Digs Out Simon! Living The High Life in NYC!

According to a blurb in today's NY Post, "Taylor Hicks has a suite setup in a celebrity-loving condominium building. The American Idol winner, now a Broadway star, is the latest boldface name to take a pied-à-terre in the Atelier building - just a short sashay to the Brooks Atkinson Theatre where he co-stars in "Grease."

The Post has previously reported that Lindsay Lohan and Nick Lachey (and we suppose Vanessa Minnillo) have been provided with free apartments at the amenity-laden West 42nd Street complex. We're hearing Hicks doesn't have a similar pay-us-later deal, and his lease is up on September 15 (he leaves "Grease" on September 7).

"He's currently purchasing pieces and working with designers to make his apartment his own comfortable place," says a source. Our Micki Siegel will have an exclusive look inside Hicks' place later in the summer.
"

You can live here too if you're rich! Seems the one-bedroom furnished model is currently being rented for a mere $4,600/month! Check it out here.

So the next time you see a chroll crawling around the 'net, just remind them of Taylor's summer digs and watch them crawl back into their roach infested hole :)

Taylor Hicks & the Cast of *Grease* Attendance Way Up!

This week, box office receipts show *Grease* up 11.7% in attendance over last week. According to BroadwayWorld.Com, the audience was at 98.8% capacity (last week it chimed in at only 87.1% capacity). Also, the show had the 6th largest increase in attendance amongst the 35 shows tracked on Broadway this week.

Another note of interest, the Brooks Atkinson Theater, home of Grease, has not been this full since March 23, 2008.

Obviously, Mr. Hicks is drawing BIG audiences to the show. I'm not surprised. He's an enormous talent and I think people are just beginning to see the depth of him as an all around entertainer!

Taylor Hicks Ready For Capitol 'Fourth'

For some singers, the "Capitol Fourth" experience can be imposing.

Behind them is the massive National Symphony. In front of them are 300,000 people, plus more watching on PBS.

Then again, some people are used to such commotions.

Just ask Taylor Hicks. Even before his "American Idol" fame, he sang at the Talladega Superspeedway. "It's like Mardi Gras times 10," he said.

Or ask Brian Stokes Mitchell. Lately, he's been singing with the symphonies in Boston, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles and more. "It's really fun when you get these incredible musicians behind you," he said.

Both are scheduled for the live July 4 concert, on the Capitol Lawn. So are Jerry Lee Lewis, Huey Lewis, classical stars Hayley Westenra and Harolyn Blackwell, plus more. It's a night of big music, big emotion, big fireworks. It's also a night when Hicks is usually busy somewhere.

"Every 4th of July, I've probably been performing," he said.

In the daytime, he'd take it easy near home in Birmingham, Ala. "We'd usually have barbecues. There are some beautiful lakes back home."

And at night, he would work. He rarely slowed down.

"You really have to love performing," Hicks said. "I've been in clubs where there was no one there; I've done weddings."

That's what helped him on "Idol" in 2006.

"I definitely had a vision," he said. "I had done a lot of performing; I was almost 30."

As "Idol" leaped between decades and genre, Hicks was ready. "That was from a lot of gold I listened to when I was 9 or 10 years old," he said.

Now he's leaping between different worlds. To do the July 4th concert, Hicks gets time off from his current duties, singing the Teen Angel role in Broadway's "Grease." This isn't something that a dentist's son from Alabama could have predicted. Until now, "Rent" was the only show he'd seen on Broadway.

"Luckily, the second show I've seen is one I'm in," he said.

And if Hicks needs any Broadway advice, he can turn to another "Fourth" performer.

Mitchell has done eight Broadway shows, getting Tony nominations for the last four. He won for "Kiss Me Kate" and was nominated for "Ragtime," "King Hedley II" and "Man of La Mancha."

He has kept up his music - despite a long detour.

"I was in San Diego, doing a musical with Greg Harrison," Mitchell said. "The Trapper John' producers came to see him and they decided to have me play Jackpot' Jackson."

Mitchell spent seven years as a TV doctor. He wrote background music for some episodes, but few people knew he could sing. "One episode, I had to sing. I made sure I didn't sing beautifully."

Afterward, he returned to musicals. He was doing "Kiss of the Spiderwoman" when he was approached by brash producer Garth Drabinsky, the brash Canadian producer. "He told me, I have a project. I can't tell you what it is, but when it's ready, I want you for it.'"

There was more waiting and wondering, until he finally heard. This was an adaptation of "Ragtime," focusing on the Coalhouse Walker character. Mitchell would be Coalhouse.

It was a powerhouse role, strong and strident. Mitchell became a Broadway leader. He and his wife (dancer Allyson Tucker) have done several musicals together. Now comes a new phase.

"Since my son was born four-and-a-half years ago, I've tried to just do concerts," said Mitchell, 50. He's flown out for quick shows with orchestras. He'll do that again July 4; this time, he'll be watched by masses on the lawn and on TV.

Taylor Hicks Hangs From a 10 Story Building in NYC!

Yes indeed he does! I'm pretty sure all his fans have seen this, but if you happen to be in NYC on 47th and 7th Ave. this summer, you might want to look up because THIS beautiful vision will be in your sight. Taylor is receiving some of the best publicity and attention he's ever gotten since his win on American Idol in Season 5. Those publicists on Broadway know how to promote their own people eh? Clive and Co. should take notes. And come to think of it, I would be glad to send Simon this giant bigger-than-lifesize, 10 story poster of Mr. Hicks to stick his gum on! Heh! In fact, I'll have to send him a BIG sky-lift to bring his fat ego up to Taylor's level - all the way up on the 10th floor! Read this and weep Nigel -"starring Taylor Hicks". Notice no mention of "American Idol Winner" on that ad?

Maybe on next season's backdrops, Taylor won't be decapitated again and get stuck behind the potted plant. Ya think? Pfttt. Does it really matter anymore? Nope!

Thanks to DeeDee56 for the picture!

People Magazine: Taylor Hicks Admits: I'm a Jonas Brothers Fan!

Leave it to People Magazine to give Taylor his props!! I don't know why, but I love this picture and I love the way Taylor jumped in with the Jonas Brother's fans! He just does what he wants with total freedom and is one happy dude these days!

Taylor Hicks is used to being the object of adoring fans – but when the Jonas Brothers made a TV appearance in New York, the American Idol swapped roles.

Hicks, who is currently starring in Grease on Broadway, couldn't resist partaking in Jonas Brothers mania with thousands of other fans outside of the Live With Regis & Kelly studios in New York City Thursday morning, he told PEOPLE.

"Once I arrived and saw all the Jonas Brothers fans, I got in on the screaming. We were all having a great time out there," said Hicks, who grabbed a sign from a fan and proudly held it up when the band arrived for the show. "We were all just being fans and that's a cool thing."

Asked if he's really a true fan, he told PEOPLE "I am!"

"What they do is awesome because it gets kids into music," said Hicks who was at the ABC studio to tape a performance of "Beauty School Dropout" for the show's Broadway Week celebration, to air on Friday.

"They are a classy act," he added, noting that Nick is his favorite Jonas Brother because "he's the leader of the band."

Sadly, Hicks didn't get to bond with the guys. "I just saw them in passing. They’ve got some pretty heavy security."

In addition to starring on Broadway, Hicks is busy recording his second album, which he hopes to release in the fall. "I love New York. I'm working on Broadway and it’s a great way for me to get my feet wet in acting and a great way to season yourself as a performer," he said. "I've been able to breathe more as a songwriter, having the time and being able to find the right songs."

The 31-year-old season five winner of American Idol held up a sign reading “The Jonas Brothers Rock My World!”

Taylor has been busy promoting the Broadway production of Grease. He made his Broadway debut when he joined the cast in the role of “Teen Angel” last Friday, June 6. In the role, he adds his soulful flavor to the classic “Beauty School Dropout.”

Tomorrow, Friday, June 12th, Taylor and the cast of Grease make an appearance on Regis & Kelly to sing his show-stopping song "Beauty School Dropout". Set those VCR's!

Daughtry, Underwood, Hicks: The Ass Lickers vs. the Bad Ass!

It seems Simon Fuller, one of the executive producers of AI, got married this past weekend in Napa Valley, CA. He invited Chris Daughtry and Carrie Underwood to attend [BIG surprise *belch*]. That same weekend, further south in Los Angeles, American Idol's other executive producer, Nigel Lythgoe, gets an achievement award at the SHARE, Inc. event that Taylor Hicks was supposed to headline. As it turned out, Taylor blew off the event at the last minute (apparently coming to his senses) to focus his attention on more important matters like settling into his new digs in NYC and rehearsing for his Broadway Debut in Grease.

Now, considering the above scenario, I have a question for you. Of Chris Daughtry, Carrie Underwood and Taylor Hicks, who are the ass-lickers and who is the bad-ass? Who is liberated enough to control his own career and who are the puppet tools still tied by the gonads to the American Idol corporation?

Must be such a relief to Taylor not to have completely sold his soul to his 'owners', eh? Free. At. Last.
